The Situation

Solid & Organic Waste

The impact of waste disposal on the environment and health of people in small, remote or confined communities has yet to be adequately addressed – until now.

Typically, siting a landfill requires a geological/ecological evaluation process. However, in many isolated or island communities the landfill (or “dump”) location was chosen years ago for ease of use and a good ‘burn’ site. Dumps often lack engineered lining and leachate collection systems so polluting leachate seeps through the ground into water sources, and toxins from burning garbage can blow downwind without cleanly destroying the waste.
